Which financial-assistance timeline applies to a collection notice?

Timeline worksheet: identify, then ask
Collection language can feel urgent, but the first useful task is to identify the document and biller rather than infer what must happen next. For a section 501(r)-covered hospital facility, federal rules generally include a 120-day notification period before extraordinary collection actions and generally require acceptance of financial assistance applications through the 240th day after the first post-discharge billing statement. The details and conditions appear in 26 CFR § 1.501(r)-6.
Use this compact worksheet privately:
- Locate the first post-discharge statement for the facility, if applicable.
- Put each later statement or notice in order without publishing dates or reference numbers.
- Check whether an assistance application was sent and whether the organization says it is complete.
- Request the billing-and-collections policy provision that applies to the named entity.
Sample wording: “My financial assistance application is under review. Please confirm whether it is complete, identify any missing material and deadline, and explain in writing what policy applies to collection activity while review is pending.”
Decision point: which notice is it?
A provider statement, a communication from a collection company, and formal court papers are not interchangeable. Do not assume that a request alone pauses every deadline or activity. Federal requirements have a defined scope, and state law or a hospital policy may differ. Continue reading all notices carefully.
If an application is incomplete, ask for the exact item needed rather than resubmitting broad records. If formal legal papers arrive, prompt local consumer or legal assistance may be appropriate. This post is not a substitute for advice about a specific notice. Keep any community question general: describe the policy process, not a name, billing reference, address, or exact timeline.
